Thanks for the quick alert.  I hope Tennessee Handgun Permit people get this information before anyone gets caught carrying their handgun in Virginia, when they thought they were legal but in fact, were not. Mary, Knoxville, Tennessee

Virginia No Longer Honors The Tennessee Handgun Permit

Auguest 15, 2008

The state of Virginia has removed the state of Tennessee from the Virginia State Police website, regarding honoring the Tennessee Handgun Permit.  After speaking to the Virginia State Police to confirm that this change was not a computer 'glitch', we were advised it was correct.  The state of Virginia does NOT currently honor the Tennessee Handgun Permit.

Here is the link for the Virginia State Police Website regarding this information:

The Tennessee Department of Safety has been notified of this issue and, they are wroking with the Virginia State Police to reverse this situation.  We will post up-dates at the bottom of this article.

Although Virginia allows 'open' carry, municipalities may have local codes that will not allow carrying a loaded handgun in a vehicle.  If traveling in Virginia, contact the county or municipality you are traveling into, to check on this issue.  Here is a link that might help with 'open' carry in Virginia:

Tennessee has sent a leter to the Superintendent of the Virginia State Police advising that a reciprocal agreement signed in 1997, is still in force.  There seems to have been a question by Virginia based on the State of Tennessee website regarding reciprocity with Virginia.

Since the document was signed in 1997, Tennessee has added a law that says Tennessee honors any license or permit issued by a state government.   Claification was needed by Virginia and the letter should resolve any questions.

The V.S.P. website should add Tennessee when documents are reviewed:
